D. C. Taylor Co. Finishes 2022 with Zero Safety Incidents
D. C. Taylor Co. is proud to report that it completed 71 reroofing or new construction projects and 594 service projects with zero safety incidents in 2022. “D. C. Taylor Co. has a reputation for quality workmanship on roofs that challenge even the most highly skilled trade professionals. Doing that work requires constant vigilance. Our crews not only care about their workmanship, but they also care about the safety of the job site, their coworkers, and preventing injuries. The commercial/industrial roofing contractor’s 19 crews worked 107,640 hours in 2022 safely. In fact, D. C. Taylor Co. has not had a recordable injury since October 2021. The goal of zero injuries was set in January 2022; achieving this milestone was the culmination of years of process improvement, countless hours of training, and dedication from individuals at all levels of the organization. Some of the most significant safety achievements in the last six years include the following:
2017
- Implemented a daily stretching program to reduce musculoskeletal injuries.
- Start Work Authorizations are required to ensure safety equipment is in place and hazards have been identified, abated, and discussed.
- Devised methodology to discover weak roof decks and changed our deck replacement policy.
2018
- All supervisors and lead personnel are trained as Competent Persons.
- Developed a Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) matrix prescribing specific PPE by task.
2019
- Developed an acronym based on the company name (DCTCO) to raise awareness about unintentional human error. Signage is posted at job sites.
- Received the Iowa-Illinois Safety Council’s President’s Award for personal fall arrest system Competent Person and fall rescue training.
2020
- Enhanced job site emergency action plan to include the rescue of incapacitated/injured.
- All supervisors and lead personnel trained on OSHA 30-Hour.
- Fall protection authorized user training was added to the new hire orientation.
- PPE Guide Safety Matrix was converted into a handheld card deck and distributed to crews.
2021
- Received the Iowa-Illinois Safety Council’s President’s Award for the PPE Guide card deck.
- Revised weekly toolbox talks: companywide talks in English and Spanish every other week, with project supervisors selecting and administering talks on opposite weeks.
2022
- Implemented defensive driver and reasonable suspicion training.
- Created pre-and post-trip vehicle and trailer inspection checklists.
- Partnered with Balanced Fitness & Health on an Injury Prevention Program.
“Safety is a journey, not a destination,” explains Kirk Dighton, Safety Manager, D. C. Taylor Co., Cedar Rapids, IA. The company has no intention of stopping its pursuit of safety excellence. The contractor will work on enforcement, empowerment, and improving documentation of processes, moving into a “prove it” phase. D. C.
