D. C. Taylor Co. Recognized With Two 2018 Safety Awards
On April 12, 2019, the Iowa-Illinois Safety Council (IISC) recognized D. C. Taylor Co. with two safety awards during the organization’s 66th annual Professional Development Conference and Expo in Dubuque, IA. The roofing contractor was one of five companies to be presented with the prestigious 2018 President’s Award for its outstanding contribution to controlling hazards. The IISC board of directors president, president-elect, and past president selected the President’s Award recipients.
D. C. Taylor Co. is very honored that our competent person enhancement and rescue capabilities were recognized by the safety council. “We have been diligently working to review and improve our fall protection plan and training,” says Kirk Dighton, Safety Manager, D. C. Taylor Co., Cedar Rapids, IA. “In the winter of 2018, we trained and certified over 60 project supervisors and lead men in competent person personal fall arrest systems (PFASs). Each was trained in fall rescue and equipped with a rescue pole retriever system and rescue ladder. On top of that, we’ve mandated self rescue equipment on every employee’s harness in the form of trauma straps.”
Every new hire now goes through personal fall arrest systems authorized user training, which includes hanging team members by a forklift with their harness and coaching them on how to deploy and use their trauma straps to prevent traumatic orthostatic hypotension.
Additional safety initiatives were submitted, for which D. C. Taylor Co. was presented a 2018 Hazard Control Award for implementing hazard controls that reduce or eliminate exposure to hazards in the workplace. There were 90 companies that entered over 200 submissions, all receiving recognition for their individual contributions to their workers for hazard controls. “It was wonderful to be recognized for our efforts,” says Dighton. “D.
