D. C. Taylor Co. Participates in 2021 National Safety Stand-Down
While D. C. Taylor Co. prioritizes safety every day, the company was honored to participate in the 8th annual National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction on May 3-7, 2021. The company took the opportunity to refresh more than 75 field workers on the latest data on falls in construction and how to prevent them.
“We started the week off with a company-wide fall prevention toolbox talk. Participation was required and all the information was shared via Microsoft Teams,” says Kirk Dighton, Safety Manager, D. C. Taylor Co., Cedar Rapids, IA. “Falls are the leading cause of fatalities in construction but these incidents are preventable.” D. C. Taylor Co.’s project managers, supervisors, leads, and roof technicians participated using company-issued tablets.
The toolbox talk covered the following topics:
- An explanation of job-specific fall protection plans and the requirement for each crew member to review them.
- The ABCs of fall protection (Anchor, Body Wear/Harness, Connecting Device).
- The differences between fall restraint and fall arrest and when each is appropriate.
- Equipment the company requires when workers are in the presence of a leading edge.
Additional activities for the remainder of the week consisted of performing inspections on personal fall arrest systems (i.e. full-body harnesses, lanyards, self-retracting lifelines, anchors, and horizontal lifelines). Completed inspections were noted both on the pieces of equipment and logged electronically in the company database. “It’s essential to track these inspections, especially because self-retracting lifelines are switched between crews,” says Dighton.
The safety manager, along with project supervisors, leads, and project managers (all of whom are competent person certified) completed these inspections both out in the field while on projects as well as in the company’s four offices. “It was a good team effort. Everyone jumped on it,” adds Dighton. Thanks to consistent semi-annual inspection, very few pieces of equipment needed to be taken out of service.
