D. C. Taylor Co.’s MSpark Project Named a RoofPoint™ Registered Project
Cedar Rapids, IA (August 25, 2013) – D. C. Taylor Co. is proud to announce that its roofing project at Mspark, the largest independent result-oriented marketing services provider of shared mail in America, has been recognized as a RoofPoint™ Registered Project. This is the roofing contractor’s fifth RoofPoint Registered Project.
RoofPoint™ is a voluntary, consensus-based green rating system developed by the Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing to provide a means for roofing contractors, building owners, and designers to select roof systems based on long-term energy and environmental benefits.
RoofPoint Registered Projects demonstrate roofing excellence in several key categories, including energy, materials, water, life cycle, and durability management. RoofPoint Registered Projects are submitted by applicants and determined to meet a minimum score overall and in each major RoofPoint category. RoofPoint Registered Projects are recognized to embody the key principles of sustainable roofing.
“RoofPoint Registered Projects represent the unique contribution the roofing industry is making to sustainable construction and showcase the critical role roofs play in mitigating the impact buildings have on our environment,” said Center President Craig Silvertooth.
D. C. Taylor Co. took great care in understanding Mspark’s objectives, which included a watertight roof over their Helena, AL, corporate office and warehouse spaces; a long-term reduction in the cost of emergency repairs; and reduced operating (heating and cooling) costs. Another priority was a turnkey project delivery. “They wanted to rely on us as the roofing experts and needed contractor personnel that could be self-managed,” explains Todd M. Kaska, Senior Vice President Technical Services, D. C. Taylor Co.
After discussing two potential options and the benefits of each with Kaska, Mspark hired D. C. Taylor Co. to install a new insulated white 60-mil TPO membrane. The existing standing seam metal roof was used as the roof deck, which reduced project costs. The flutes were filled with an expanded polystyrene insulation and a high-density traffic-resistant coverboard were installed before the membrane was mechanically fastened over the top to the existing structural steel purlins for additional wind uplift resistance.
The added insulation will reduce the ambient temperature in the non-conditioned warehouse space as well as reduce the heating and cooling requirements in conditioned areas. The addition of overflow drains and lining of the interior gutter system will improve roof drainage and eliminate roof leaks.
A nine-man crew completed the six-week project in late June, being mindful of the facility’s noise restrictions and ground staging requirements.
