Meet Dan Edie, Service Field Office Manager
Daniel (Dan) Edie has been learning on the job since 1972, when he first started working in construction. “Most of my knowledge has come from hands-on learning – from basic construction to laying out and designing work. I was a landscaping contractor in Arizona for 12 years and self-taught every and all skills, from masonry concrete to irrigation systems. I held a Class A contractor’s license in Arizona without schooling,” he says proudly.
His accomplishments and growth didn’t stop when he switched his career to roofing, joining D. C. Taylor Co. in 2007. “He is a fast-learner. Dan picks up on things by watching and doing,” says Raymundo Jimenez, Construction Manager, D. C. Taylor Co., Concord, CA.
“Most of my learning is through asking a lot of questions and, as time goes on, daily experiences,” Edie adds. Coupled with various training opportunities, he has accumulated tremendous knowledge and skills. “I completed the IRCC [Independent Roofing Contractors of California] apprenticeship program, which classifies me as a journeyman roofer,” he says. He’s also been trained on OSHA 10 and 30; Cal/OSHA 10; as well as the operation of rough terrain forklifts, mobile elevating work platforms, and swing stage suspended scaffolding. Add to this, Butler Manufacturing metal roof systems installer training and extensive fall protection equipment instruction. “Anything safety-related is important in the roofing industry, but fall protection is the most important,” he says. (Edie is also certified as a fall protection competent person.)
After 10 years with D. C. Taylor Co., he was promoted to Service Field Office Manager, a position that requires equal parts roofing knowledge and managing field service crew members. “This is the first time in my life, even when I had my own business, that I was able to build something – financially and emotionally. This company has taught me how to set goals and reach them,” says Edie.
Working out of D. C. Taylor Co.’s Concord, CA, office, Edie manages four two-man service crews, estimates service projects, and oversees their execution. “One of the things he’s really good at, in my experience, is that he follows directions and can execute any plan,” praises Jimenez. “He’s a good communicator in the way he expresses or explains things to the customer too. He’s good at talking to people.”
When asked what is most rewarding about his job, his reply was simply, “When I receive compliments from customers on the performance of our company.” With dedication and determination, Edie has figured out just exactly how to earn a customer’s satisfaction and kindle an ever-growing enthusiasm for his job. “I love it,” he concludes.
