D. C. Taylor Co. Wins Hazard Control Recognition Award from IISC
Cedar Rapids, IA (May 3, 2016) – D. C. Taylor Co. was presented a Hazard Control Recognition Award from the Iowa-Illinois Safety Council (IISC) during the organization’s 63rd Annual Professional Development Conference and Expo held in Cedar Rapids, IA, April 13-15, 2016. D. C. Taylor Co. was among 100 industries and government agencies in Illinois and Iowa to enter.
As defined by the IISC, a chapter of National Safety Council, a hazard control is a specific, identifiable change implemented to reduce or eliminate an individual’s exposure to a hazard in the workplace. D. C. Taylor Co.’s entry cited three actions the company has taken in the past year:
- Replacement of non-leading edge self-retracting lifelines (SRLs) with leading edge SRLs. Discontinuing the use of non-leading edge SRLs is in accordance with the 2012 SNSI Z359.14, and removes the hazard of the wire rope in older SRLs being severed due to contact with leading edges.
- Development of a first man up kit and process reduces the time an employee is on the roof without an active form of fall protection when accessing the roof for a reroofing or service project. The process mandates that the installation of a personal fall arrest system be executed first before material loading, setting up warning lines, etc. The kit contains a body harness, vertical lifeline, roof anchor plate, rope grab, cordless screw gun, fasteners, and cross-arm strap.
- Conducting jobsite safety inspections weekly required a new process. A designated individual on each roofing crew completes the inspections each week using a formalized checklist. This effort ensures compliant project conditions and activities, reduces exposure to identified hazards, results in improved safety knowledge by the roofing crew, and improves OSHA compliance.
“It’s great to be recognized with this award, but this is just the start of our efforts to continue making improvements that advance our safety program for the benefit of employees throughout the company,” says Brad Richardson, Director of Environmental Health & Safety, D. C. Taylor Co., Phoenix.
