5 Energy-Efficient Commercial/Industrial Roofing Strategies

August 26, 2014

When it’s time for your next roofing project, consider the impact that this assembly can have on the facility’s energy expense. Keep the following in mind.

Strategy No. 1: Increase roof R-value.

Insulation is the most widely understood energy-efficient roofing strategy. Refer to the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC 2012), as well as other application building codes/requirements of Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs).

Strategy No. 2: Reduce thermal discontinuities.

Insulation application strategies can greatly reduce gaps and voids and increase energy efficiency.

Strategy No. 3: Install a climate-appropriate roof surface.

Identify the ideal solar reflectance and thermal emittance for the climate in your geographic location. Select a roof system accordingly.

Strategy No. 4: Restrict air movement and thermal transfer.

An air barrier is a material installed to impede or restrict the passage of air through a roof assembly. If chosen, it needs to be part of a complete building envelope evaluation.

Strategy No. 5: Install daylighting skylights.

Depending on space function, daylighting skylights can be a practical approach to reduce the need for artificial lighting and energy consumption.
