88 Participate in D. C. Taylor Co. Winter Training Event
D. C. Taylor Co. recently concluded the last of its winter training. These annual workshops provided roof technicians, lead persons, project supervisors, and project managers the opportunity to learn new skills and refresh existing knowledge. Field personnel from the company’s Chicago area and Iowa headquarters attended the event in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Feb. 5-9, while crews from the Phoenix area and Concord, California were trained March 18-21 in the California office.
Training included the following:
- Trade work skills development (e.g., heat welding single-ply membrane seams, installing termination bars, etc.).
- Truck and trailer inspections.
- Proper use of personal fall arrest systems.
- Descent and rescue procedures (e.g., use of a rescue ladder and trauma straps).
- PPE inspections.
- Fire safety and use of extinguishers.
- CPR, first aid, and bloodborne pathogens.
- Leadership and teamwork.
“We are constantly providing on-the-job training and toolbox talks throughout the year for our field personnel, but this annual training is a wonderful time to bring in professional speakers; discuss as a larger group, areas of concern and improvement; as well as refresh basic skills,” explains Kirk Dighton, Safety Manager, D. Taylor Co., Cedar Rapids, Iowa. “One of the most important exercises we do during annual training is our fall protection simulations, where individuals practice responding to a rescue or descent scenario. Safety is a big part of our culture, and these training events reinforce that.”
Additional sessions emphasized the importance of physical and mental health and company resources that are aligned to improve employees’ well-being. This included instruction on daily stretches designed to reduce work-related injuries in the field. Goal setting for 2024 was another topic of discussion.
