Taylor Co. and the REGIONAL SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS ALLIANCE, a committee of the Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce, are sponsoring a special environmental roofing seminar for commercial and industrial facilities. Attendees will learn about the many ways a commercial roofing system works toward the goals of a sustainable built environment. The seminar is targeted to facilities managers, contractors, roofers, engineers, designers, architects, and energy efficiency raters.

Building a sustainable environment.
Few elements of modern construction have as great an impact on long-term sustainability as roofs. In addition to saving energy, roofs also provide an attractive platform for the deployment of sustainable energy technologies, including solar and wind power, and serve as the "first responder" to critical environmental impacts such as heat island effects, air pollution, and storm water runoff. Developed by the Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing, RoofPoint is a roofing-specific green building rating system designed to promote an environmentally responsible built environment. This presentation will highlight the criteria and methodology incorporated into RoofPoint.

Presidential Candidate and Texas Governor Rick Perry Tours
D. C. Taylor Co. Commercial Roofing Firm

Candidate learns about company’s ability to adapt to client needs
and respond with innovative and sustainable solutions

Gov. Perry visiting D. C. Taylor

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa, August 16, 2011 – Texas Governor and presidential candidate Rick Perry visited D. C. Taylor Co., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, today as a part of his Midwest bus tour. He spent about one hour talking business with D. C. Taylor Co. president Phil Suess, touring the commercial roofing company's headquarters, meeting employees and speaking about creating jobs for Americans. Governor Perry also spent time greeting more than 60 of the roofing company’s employees from all over the U.S. who were in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for a training session.

Perry, along with his wife and family , learned more about the issues facing the commercial roofing industry and how the company has managed to hire 232 employees since 2008, a feat that few businesses its size have accomplished in the last three years.

“Governor Perry was very interested in learning more about our company’s safety and risk management programs, how we build roofs that are more sustainable and green, and our approach to recycling and keeping materials out of landfills,” said Suess “We were very appreciative that he chose D. C. Taylor Co. as one of his stops along his tour.”

D. C. Taylor Co. realizes its clients require planning and information from the company that allows for better decisions, a reduction of waste and to be more efficient in maintaining roof assets as well as extending the life of the roofs.

“Our commitment to environmental and sustainability goals go beyond installing cool white roofs and insulation,” explained Suess. “As a founding member of The Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing (CEIR), we want to help our customers achieve comprehensive, sustainable and proactive management practices related to their roofing assets."

Installing solar panels to generate energy, using daylighting systems to reduce energy consumption, and reusing or recycling roofing components to reduce waste are just a few of the environmentally responsible solutions it provides customers nationwide.

D. C. Taylor Co. is one of the 20 largest industrial roofing contractors in the U.S. It’s Risk Management and Safety program includes permanent fall protection and services that identify and mitigate everyday risks such as injuries from falls and food contamination. All of which is designed to protect the customer, its employees and property.

Roofing Reconsidered: RoofPoint Guidelines Hone Industry's Best Practices

An article in the August 2011 issue of Building Operating Management magazine outlines the benefits of using RoofPoint guidelines for new roofs and re-roofing projects. Todd Kaska, vice president for strategic accounts at D. C. Taylor Co., recently used RoofPoint for a project at Meridian Vineyards in Paso Robles, Calif.

"We evaluated the Meridian project with the RoofPoint criteria for several reasons," Kaska says. "Meridian, like many other wineries, is highly sophisticated in its approach to sustainability."

In addition, Kaska says, the RoofPoint evaluation criteria provides Meridian with a method to document and measure decisions for developing projects as it relates to maintaining or replacing their roofs.

Echoing Hoff's sentiments about a significant benefit of RoofPoint, Kaska also says that the RoofPoint program provides a method of documentation that LEED does not provide in making decisions regarding existing facilities.

Finally, for both the Meridian project and other D. C. Taylor Co. projects, Kaska says that the evaluation criteria allow his company to better document recycling and waste diversion.

D. C. Taylor Co. Waterproofing Project Featured as a Case Study on the Sika Sarnafil Website

D. C. Taylor Co.'s waterproofing project at the University of Northern Iowa – McLeod Center in Cedar Falls, Iowa is now featured as a case study on the Sika Sarnafil website. This project, which required D. C. Taylor Co. to overcome some unique challenges, was accomplished with quality workmanship and exceptional project management. The project required waterproofing a heavily trafficked 25,000 square foot plaza area that was located above offices and maintenance areas. Leak tight performance was critical. The owner selected Sika Sarnafil's System 1000 to waterproof the plaza, which consisted of two sections, divided by an enclosed walkway connecting two buildings. The work required constant coordination with other trades to maintain quality workmanship and meet tight schedules. Attention to detail was critical as the plaza deck pavers were held in place by 320 pins, each one set in grid adhesive and flashed for a watertight seal.
