History.

1950
Founder Dudley C. Taylor started his tuckpointing and masonry repair business in Chicago in 1949 as Taylor Tuckpointing. In 1952, Dudley and his wife Margaret moved to Vinton, Iowa; and the company's name was changed to D. C. Taylor Co. In 1954, the corporate office moved from Vinton to Cedar Rapids, where it remains today.

Throughout the 1950s, D. C. Taylor Co. was a small local contractor in Eastern Iowa that specialized in tuckpointing and masonry repair. Clients would call D. C. Taylor Co. to fix leaks in brickwork near cornices, and often roof leaks would be found. As a result, the company would renovate both problems.

1960
By 1960, D. C. Taylor Co. had grown into a rather sizable company and was formally incorporated that year. As the business grew in size, so did the variety of services it offered. During the 1960s, D. C. Taylor Co. acquired Haegg Roofing Company, one of the largest roofing companies in Iowa at that time.

In 1964, D. C. Taylor Co.’s tuckpointing division was awarded the contract to renovate the Washington Monument.

1970
During the 1970s, the company tightened its focus to primarily roofing and expanded throughout the Midwest. A large portion of the company’s sales growth came from single-ply membranes. D. C. Taylor Co. installed its first Carlisle EPDM single-ply roof in 1968. The company expanded its single-ply experience with the PVC systems of Trocal and Sarnafil, installing more than 600 single-ply roofs between 1974 and 1978. In response to the energy crisis, D. C. Taylor Co. led the way with new insulation techniques and efficient building systems.

1980
The 1980s brought the first RoofTop Seminars™ sponsored by D. C. Taylor Co. to help clients understand their roofing options. D. C. Taylor Co. experienced tremendous growth in the 1980s as a result of its developing relationship with J.P. Stevens’ single-ply products and its search for national and target accounts. In 1981, D. C. Taylor Co. started serving clients nationwide. Over the next 10 years, D. C. Taylor Co.’s crews worked in 48 states, including Alaska and Hawaii.

In 1985, Dudley C. Taylor stepped down as Chairman of D. C. Taylor Co. His children purchased the shares of the company, and his son, Bill Taylor, who had been working for the company since 1968, took his father’s place as Chairman and CEO.

The company continued to innovate, developing several unique roofing tools and systems to improve the efficiency and quality of trade work. Their work in difficult roofing situations established their expertise in roof access and hazard analysis services.

1990
Throughout the 1990s, D. C. Taylor Co. continued to grow and evolve into a leader in the roofing industry. Growing with the changes in the roofing industry, the company continued its push for system diversity, offering single-ply, modified bitumen, standing-seam metal, polyurethane foam, and coatings, as well as traditional built-up roofing. In 1992, D. C. Taylor Co. opened a sales and service office in Atlanta to better serve its customers on the East Coast.

In 1994, the D. C. Taylor Co. board of directors voted to sell its consulting subsidiary to focus on contracting. That company has since changed its name to Benchmark, Inc., and is a nationally recognized roof consulting firm based in Cedar Rapids.

In the spring of 1997, a Concord, California, roofing company (Cypress Roof Corporation) that was primarily owned by Bill Taylor, joined the D. C. Taylor Co. family as its West Coast service office. In 1998, the employees of NRC Universal, Inc., of Phoenix, Arizona, became D. C. Taylor Co.’s Southwest service office.

2000
By 2003, D. C. Taylor Co. had added a new sales and service office in Chicago, Illinois and was ranked the 13th largest roofing contractor in the United States.

Today, D. C. Taylor Co. continues to provide responsible roofing services that protect both the inside and outside of buildings and businesses. They are working closely with a roofing software specialist to develop and introduce a new online roof management tool called RoofLogic™ Asset Manager. Company leaders continue to support the roofing industry through involvement in associations, roofing foundations and legislative efforts. And D. C. Taylor Co. employees are doing whatever it takes to serve clients needs and to protect roofing assets.
